Yapı Kredi Bank Library was opened in Çemberlitaş, 15. 9. 1987. This specialization library which houses an important collection of literature, history and art history books is a gift to our culture and art life, from the bank. The nearly two thousand manuscripts held by the library, acquired from the collections of M. Fuat Köprülü, Prof. Cavit Baysun, Falih Rıfkı Atay, Hamdullah Suphi Tanrıöver, İsmail Hikmet Ertaylan, Küçük Sait Paşa, Şevket Rado, Vedat Nedim Tör and Yahya Kemal Beyatlı, constitute its most precious possession. There was also a cinema and a children’s library in this building.
Yapı Kredi Sermet Çifter Research Library was opened in 29 July 1992, when the library in Çemberlitaş was moved to its current place.
The library was reconstructed in 2000 and was turned into an expertise library specializing in Turkish history, Turkish culture, Turkish and world literature and İstanbul, the city.
Library Collection
Yapı Kredi Sermet Çifter Research Library collection consists of 5 main sections: general collection, manuscripts, rare books, periodicals and Yapı Kredi Publishing House backlist.
General Collection
Yapı Kredi Sermet Çifter Research Library collection houses 80.000 titles. Most of these titles are on the subjects of Turkish history, Turkish culture, Turkish and world literature, art and İstanbul history. Atatürk and history of republic are also important subjects.
Manuscripts
There are 1578 manuscripts gathered within 1117 bindings. A catalogue about these manuscripts dated from 14th century and beginning of 20th century was published and presented to the researchers in 2001.
Rare Books
There are more than 1000 rare books in the library, gathered from many different sources, printed in various languages. A catalogue about these titles printed between 16th and 20th century was prepared and printed in May 2002. There are 307 rare works in this catalogue, including “Geographia” (1523) by Strabonis, “Cedit Atlas Tercümesi” (1803) by Raif Efendi, “Cihannüma” (1732) by Katip Çelebi.
Periodicals
In the periodicals collection of the library, there are more than 750 magazines and journals which consist of important periodicals that were printed in Turkey from the beginning of 20th century on. This collection also houses an orderly newspaper collection of 1600 bindings. The library follows and offers 11 daily newspapers and 40 journals.
Yapı Kredi Publishing House
Yapı Kredi Publishing house is one of the largest publishing houses in Turkey with an average of publishing 150 books a year. Its backlist consists of more than 2600 books as of January 2008. You can find all Yapı Kredi Publishing House publications in our library also.
Archives
The library also houses the archives of some of the prominent names and institutions of our country, which left their mark in Turkey’s culture, art and history. Some of these are: Yeditepe Journal’s Archive, Hüsamettin Bozok Archive, Melih Cevdet Archive, Orhan Burian Archive.
Library Rules and Membership
Yapı Kredi Sermet Çifter Research Library is a specialization library. Therefore, a membership is required. Non-members can use the library for short durations (1-2 days) if they make an appointment beforehand.
Anyone can become a member.
Membership is yearly and members can use the library within working hours. There is no need to make an appointment beforehand if you are a member. Also, there is a %50 discount of photocopy fees for members.
